Jordan's Merras Olive Tree Inscribed on UNESCO List

The International Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, part of UNESCO, announced today in New Delhi, India, the inclusion of the Jordanian olive tree 'Merras' in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is noted that the Merras tree is a fundamental element of the ancient pastoral and agricultural civilization. It is characterized by its ability to adapt to climate change and harsh environments, as well as by preserving the exceptional quality of its oil. The oil content in Merras olives reaches 30%, one of the highest percentages among olive varieties worldwide. Furthermore, the oil is distinguished by a unique composition of fatty acids with a high content of oleic acid, as well as distinctive sensory properties and a fruity flavor specific to Merras oil. The Merras tree is also one of the oldest genetic olive varieties in the Mediterranean region. Analysis of the Merras genetic map has shown that it is genetically closest to the supposed origin of olives in Spain, Italy, and Cyprus, which, along with Merras, belong to the same genetic group.
