A court in the Jordanian capital, Amman, has sentenced two cancer patients to an alternative punishment: they must memorize verses from the Quran. In two separate cases, the court found the first patient guilty of resisting law enforcement and the second guilty of a traffic accident, applying an alternative sentence to each. In detail, a judge from Amman's criminal court ordered each of them to memorize Quranic surahs for 48 hours, at a rate of five hours per day. The judge decided to enroll the cancer patients in a rehabilitation program due to their health conditions. Amman's West Court has reportedly applied over 300 alternative community penalties since the beginning of this year.
